Hanna J. Barton, PhD (they/them) is a Scientist in the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the founding Research Director of the Emergency Care Systems Laboratory. Dr. Barton is a Human Factors engineer whose work bridges research and operations to drive real, lasting change in how care is delivered. Their research draws on macroergonomics, systems engineering, and human-centered design methods, including embedded field research and health information technology evaluation, to tackle complex challenges in technology implementation, patient safety and experience, and workforce well-being. Their work has been published in leading medical, patient safety, informatics, and human factors journals including Pediatrics, BMJ Quality & Safety, Journal of Patient Safety, Applied Clinical Informatics, and Human Factors. They hold a BS in Biomedical Engineering and an MS and PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
