D&I Education and Resources

D&I Short Course

The D&I Short Course is a forum for researchers and community stakeholders to explore the emerging fields of dissemination and implementation sciences with national and local experts. The course includes interactive sessions that navigate the steps from concept and design to adaptation and implementation in practice.

This short course attracts a multi-disciplinary group from all over the world interested in learning about new concepts and frameworks, hearing examples being used in health care delivery and community settings, and applying this knowledge and expert feedback to their own projects and research. Our program archives provide all event agendas, materials, and speaker presentation videos.

Researchers are encouraged to use D&I frameworks and models for study design. These frameworks and models will help guide your dissemination and implementation planning and activities.

How to Get Started

There are more than 60 frameworks for your use. For guidance on selecting the right framework tool, we recommend you begin with Dr. Tabak’s publication: Bridging Research and Practice: Models for Dissemination and Implementation Research (PDF)

For an in-depth look at several options, please visit this interactive and searchable website database developed by the Center for Research in Implementation Science and Prevention (CRISP) at the University of Colorado.

Our D&I team has also developed this list below of frequently used frameworks successfully utilized by the research community. This cultivated list provides researchers with a starting point to begin planning dissemination and implementation activities.

New to Implementation Science?

What is Dissemination and Implementation Science: An Introduction
International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. March 2020. Shelton, R.C., Lee, M., Brotzman, L.E. et al.

This piece provides an introduction to D&I science and summarizes key concepts and progress of the field for a global audience, provides two case studies that highlight examples of D&I research globally, and identifies opportunities and innovations for advancing the field of D&I research globally.

An Introduction to Implementation Science for the Non-Specialist
BMC Psychology. September 2015 3:32. Bauer et al.

An introduction to implementation science principles for non-specialist investigators, administrators, and policymakers seeking to become familiar with this emerging field. This introduction is based on published literature and the authors’ experience as researchers in the field, as well as extensive service as implementation science grant reviewers.

Resources for Intellectual Property

  • Intellectual Property
    • UW researchers have an obligation to disclose inventions created while carrying out their university duties, using any university funding, or using university premises, supplies, or equipment. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education is responsible for evaluating UW–Madison invention disclosure to determine who may have rights to the invention as laid out by federal rules, contracts, or other obligations. In some cases, UW-Madison inventors may retain rights to their inventions or petition the federal government to obtain these rights.

      • Licensing your work, including Creative Commons
      • Laws and policies governing ownership of intellectual property
      • Additional links and contact information for intellectual property resources
  • Copyright Determination Worksheet
    • This template can help aid in the determination of authorship and ownership of materials created during the course of a research project. It is best to start this document as early as possible and update the information as needed.
  • Intellectual Property Workshop
    • This workshop is designed to guide understanding of the regulations relevant to the interventions investigators propose to develop as part of the ICTR Pilot Award.
