Launching Breakthrough Science Teams: A Team Science Workshop for Post Docs

Imagine you won a prestigious grant for a complex, interdisciplinary research project. What are the best practices from the science of team science that you should know to get your team on the path to success?

Given that the most pressing problems of the future increasingly will be addressed by teams working across disciplinary divides, ICTR’s Team Science Core has assembled the tools and techniques to help you successfully launch your research project. The most vital questions are often taken for granted: how will you build a positive team culture? What will motivate your team to excel, how will you handle change and conflict, and what support systems will your team use to manage its research and data? This 90-minute workshop draws on the science of team science to prepare you to effectively launch and lead your new team.

We will:

• Explore how to manage team conflict by facilitating interdisciplinary conversations that establish a clear understanding of team expectations
• Identify ways to strengthen team culture by creating a psychologically safe environment
• Discuss how to improve team impact by establishing effective research support systems that lead to realizable outputs.

 The workshop will be a mix of short didactic and interactive sections, with the goal of increasing your knowledge of and comfort with engaging in interdisciplinary research and team science.
