Scientific Seminar August 24th: “Psychological Trauma Research, Its Impact, and the Evolution of a Trauma-Informed Care Organizational Approach”

August 24 @ 12:05 pm - 1:00 pm

You are invited to Marshfield Clinic Research Institute’s next Scientific Seminar series presentation on Wednesday, August 24 at 12:05 pm by Dr. Myra West who will deliver a talk entitled “Psychological Trauma Research, Its Impact, and the Evolution of a Trauma-Informed Care Organizational Approach”

This presentation focuses on the impact of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and traumatic stress on human development. PTEs during prenatal, conception, pregnancy, perinatal, and birth to 3 stages may negatively impact brain development of a fetus pre-, peri-, and postnatal. Impacts may include self-regulation concerns physiologically, cognitively, physically, and emotionally and may also be noted following PTEs at other stages of the life-span. Concepts of psychological trauma, traumatic stress, and posttraumatic growth will be discussed in the context of trauma-informed care at MCHS highlighted by a post-COVID-19 world.

Myra DW West, PSY, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Director of Organizational Trauma and Resilience at MCHS and specializes in traumatic stress studies with a secondary specialization in organizational psychology integrating the two to promote workforce and psychological wellness, healing, and posttraumatic growth. Current work includes implementation of a systematic trauma-informed care organizational model for MCHS certification as a trauma-informed, -responsive, and –resilient organization. This project will work in collaboration with various MCHS initiatives, including the Marshfield Promise, emphasizing our organizational workforce, culture, and patients. Dr. West has served patients in rural and urban hospitals, ICUs, Level 1 Burn and Wound Care Center, and EDs focused on child abuse, pediatric and adult burns, homicide/suicide/death of loved one, domestic violence, community violence, officer-involved shootings, and trauma-informed policy development with law enforcement agencies.
