SUMMARY:Moving from Anxiety to Authenticity: 10 Practical Steps to Improving Communication with Community Participants
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first session of ICTR’s Recruitment & Retention Resource Center’s workshop series\, How We Talk With Research Participants: The Art of Communication. \nPresenter: Gina Green-Harris \nEngaging in discussions about academic research often includes terminology that is unfamiliar to the potential participants or may tell potential participants “what” we plan to do\, or “how” we plan to conduct the research “on” them as community members. These practices often create challenges to participation in studies and raise skepticism about research in general. \nLearning how to approach the community with authentic communication is a skill that is often overlooked. Using authentic communication with community to discuss research can be accomplished by using an asset based and conversational approach that can lead to shared communications. Learning to engage in authentic conversations promotes transparency\, shared learning\, and opportunities to exchange varied knowledge.  In authentic communication all parties to be heard\, focuses on commonalities which can reduce conversation anxiety on both parties. Further authentic conversations may lead to stronger bonding and longer research engagement over time within academic- community partnerships. \nThis workshop will explore ten practical communication practices that can be used to implement transparent\, skillful conversations about research with community members and explore how authentic communication can be of added value and benefit to the research process. \nLearn more about the full workshop series!

SUMMARY:DRISS Presents TEACH-Recruitment Science (TEACH-RS) Seminar - Voices of community partners: Insights and invitations to inspire research
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 9 at noon (CST)\, Crystal Stevenson\, Greg Merritt\, PhD\, Trina Harris\, MPA\, Kari Bañuelos\, MA\, and Cristina Johnson will present\, “Voices of community partners: Insights and invitations to inspire researchers.” \n\nCrystal Stevenson is a Community Coordinator at the University of Illinois Chicago\nDr. Greg Merritt is Founder at Patient is Partner\, LLC\nTrina Harris is CEO of Touching Miami with Love\nKari Bañuelos is a Senior Research Associate at Clarity Social Research Group\nCristina Johnson is Director of Volunteer & Community Engagement at Second Harvest Foodbank of Southwestern Wisconsin and a Member of the Community Advisors on Research Design and Strategies (CARDS)\n\nThis session recreates a panel presentation offered at the Translational Science 2025 conference held in Washington\, DC this April with over 120 people in attendance. For many years\, community partners have experienced the intense resource challenges now facing academia. Through the challenges\, they developed creative ways to get important work done. Join us to hear the perspectives of community partners from across the country as they respond to provocative questions such as: \n\nThe world is on fire. What does this look like for you as a community organization and what would you like to see from academics and research at this point in time?\nHow is research a site of resistance?\nAre there ways to expand the possibilities for mutual benefit in partnering with community members who live in vulnerable conditions created by systems of oppression?\nHow do you build trust and ensure that partnerships remain equitable over time?\nWhat enhanced opportunities for equity and transparency exist in attending to the “feedback loop” in community-academic partnerships?\n\nDRISS Presents TEACH-RS is an interactive\, monthly lunchtime seminar to learn about dissemination and implementation research and recruitment science. Enhance your knowledge\, share experiences\, and develop connections with others in this community for your future work. It occurs every second Friday of the academic year at noon and is open to all. Auto generated captions in English are available. Participants can receive credit for attending DRISS Presents TEACH-RS through Barbara King. Register via Zoom to attend.
