Monuments and Meanings: UW-Madison and Beyond

CCHE would like to share a UW Continuing Studies course opportunity ~

How do monuments carry meaning? What happens when those meanings change?

Debates rage about public monuments across the country and right here in Wisconsin: what to do with statues that celebrate the confederacy, whether to rename public spaces and institutions, and how to memorialize this country’s legacy of racism.

Join four experts for discussions that anchor these debates in examples taken directly from the UW–Madison campus, including ancient effigy mounds, plaques and statues, and brand new heritage markers. Conversations will illuminate local history and connect you to national conversations.

Class includes a walking tour of Bascom Hill led by Aaron Bird Bear.

Class Dates: 5 sessions; Wednesdays, Oct 3-24 from 7-8:30pm & walking tour on Monday, October 15.
Location: Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St. Madison, WI.
Cost: $60
