Amit Acharya BDS, MS, PhD, is the ICTR Director for Marshfield Clinic Research Institute (MCRI) and MCRI Executive Director at Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS). He also serves as the Chief Dental Informatics Officer (CDIO) of the Family Health Center (FHC) at MCHS. As an ICTR Director, he oversees the strategic partnership of MCRI/MCHS with UW ICTR and facilitates institutional- and investigator-level collaborations.
Dr. Acharya has been a leading researcher and is well-regarded throughout the U.S. for his expertise in biomedical and dental informatics. As a general dental surgeon and a computer scientist with expertise in biomedical informatics, his research focus is on integration of medical and dental data, clinical and research information systems, architecture of electronic health records, clinical decision supports, and investigating the oral-systemic disease relationship. He was instrumental in founding the MCRI Center for Oral and Systemic Health, one of six research centers at the MCRI and in integration of the MCHS electronic dental record with its propriety electronic medical record.
Dr. Acharya has published over 100 scientific abstracts and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and received multiple grant funding dedicated to bridging the medical and dental divide. He has also edited a book published by Springer Nature, Integration of Medical and Dental Care and Patient Data.
Dr. Acharya has held several national leadership roles at American Dental Education Association and American Medical Informatics Association’s Dental Informatics Group. He also served as the chairman of the clinical informatics sub-committee of the American Dental Associations’ (ADA) Standards Committee for Dental Informatics and was the ADA representative to the Health Level Seven in 2017. He has served on national HIT expert panels coordinated by entities like Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and National Quality Forum. Dr. Acharya currently serves as a member on the advisory board of the National Center for Community Health Research and ADA Dental Quality Alliance’s Implementation and Evaluation Committee.
