Nichelle Cobb, PhD, serves as the ICTR Human Subjects Protections Officer. Formerly Director of the UW-Madison Health Sciences Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), she was a driving force behind development of the SMART IRB, a national initiative sponsored by the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) to create a master IRB authorization agreement and support single IRB review. She continues to serve as the Director of SMART IRB Operations and is both the Midwest Regional Ambassador, as well as an Ambassador at large, for the SMART IRB.

Her portfolio at ICTR includes providing expertise for workforce development programs related to research with human subjects. In addition, she is working on an ICTR-based team to develop an approach to electronic informed consent that leverages the possibilities IT offers for recruitment.

Cobb acts as a site visitor for Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and has been a member of the Workshop/Didactic Subcommittee for Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R).
