Dr. Barbara King is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Aging Research and Education (CARE) at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, School of Nursing. Her program of research focuses on improving outcomes for hospitalized older adults, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Dr. King has conducted multiple studies to understand acute care nurse decision making for patient ambulation, impact of organizational fall prevention culture on nursing care of fall risk patients, frequency ad duration of nurse-initiated patient ambulation, ambulation recovery post discharge in hospitalized older adults, how older adult patients engage in the work of ambulation during a hospital stay, and older adult patient perception and experiences with ambulation during a hospital stay. Dr. King’s ultimate goal is to reduce the incidence of hospital associated disability in older adult patients by improving care quality.
