Matthew Harer, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, will perform a project entitled, “Investigating renal tissue oxygenation monitoring in preterm neonates for the early detection of AKI.” Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs commonly in preterm neonates and is independently associated with increased short term morbidities, mortality, and chronic kidney disease during childhood. In preterm neonates, the current markers of AKI are extremely late findings, developing only after significant kidney damage has occurred. The goal of this project is to evaluate a non-invasive continuous tissue oxygenation monitoring device called Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in preterm neonates at risk for AKI. Validation of the ability to accurately detect kidney tissue oxygenation changes before AKI in this population will allow the development of kidney NIRS monitoring protocols that can be used in prospective multi-center AKI trials.
