About

On Friday, May 9 at noon (CST), Crystal Stevenson, Greg Merritt, PhD, Trina Harris, MPA, Kari Bañuelos, MA, and Cristina Johnson will present, “Voices of community partners: Insights and invitations to inspire researchers.”

  • Crystal Stevenson is a Community Coordinator at the University of Illinois Chicago
  • Dr. Greg Merritt is Founder at Patient is Partner, LLC
  • Trina Harris is CEO of Touching Miami with Love
  • Kari Bañuelos is a Senior Research Associate at Clarity Social Research Group
  • Cristina Johnson is Director of Volunteer & Community Engagement at Second Harvest Foodbank of Southwestern Wisconsin and a Member of the Community Advisors on Research Design and Strategies (CARDS)

This session recreates a panel presentation offered at the Translational Science 2025 conference held in Washington, DC this April with over 120 people in attendance. For many years, community partners have experienced the intense resource challenges now facing academia. Through the challenges, they developed creative ways to get important work done. Join us to hear the perspectives of community partners from across the country as they respond to provocative questions such as:

  • The world is on fire. What does this look like for you as a community organization and what would you like to see from academics and research at this point in time?
  • How is research a site of resistance?
  • Are there ways to expand the possibilities for mutual benefit in partnering with community members who live in vulnerable conditions created by systems of oppression?
  • How do you build trust and ensure that partnerships remain equitable over time?
  • What enhanced opportunities for equity and transparency exist in attending to the “feedback loop” in community-academic partnerships?

DRISS Presents TEACH-RS is an interactive, monthly lunchtime seminar to learn about dissemination and implementation research and recruitment science. Enhance your knowledge, share experiences, and develop connections with others in this community for your future work. It occurs every second Friday of the academic year at noon and is open to all. Auto generated captions in English are available. Participants can receive credit for attending DRISS Presents TEACH-RS through Barbara KingRegister via Zoom to attend.
