Earlier this month, the ICTR community lost a longstanding and valued member with the passing of Senior Financial Manager Barry Sievers.
Barry supervised the finance team within ICTR Central Administration and oversaw financial operations across a wide range of ICTR programs, funding sources, and partner engagements. This included close coordination with the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute and with ICTR’s partner schools on campus. He played a pivotal role in guiding ICTR through several renewals of its CTSA grant from the NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, as well as other grant renewals.
Barry had been with ICTR nearly since its beginning, joining the staff four years after ICTR’s inception. He brought a deep level of knowledge and institutional memory to his work, as well as a sense of humor and a willingness to help others. He particularly enjoyed managing the finance team within ICTR, helping them grow and succeed.
Barry joined the UW–Madison School of Medicine & Public Health in 2001 and took on his ICTR role in 2011.
In addition to his professional life, Barry was a proud father and enjoyed many outdoor pursuits, including cycling. His obituary may be seen here, and an article from Breakthrough T1D (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) details his commitment to helping raise funds for this cause alongside his friends.
As a community, we are deeply saddened by this loss, but grateful for all that Barry contributed to the ICTR community, both personally and professionally.
