Awards recognize outstanding contributions by faculty mentoring faculty
Faculty who mentor their fellow faculty members play a critical role in developing leaders in clinical and translational research.
Last year, in order to recognize significant contributions to mentorship on campus, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) created a new award, the UW ICTR Faculty Mentorship Award. This award seeks to identify and recognize faculty who have contributed to the career and personal growth of clinical and translational research faculty through intentional, culturally responsive, and evidence-based mentorship practices.
From a competitive and inspiring pool of nominees, four winners were selected for 2024: Dorothy Farrar-Edwards, PhD; Olayinka Shiyanbola, PhD; Jim Stein, MD; and Corinne Voils, PhD. (Learn more about the 2024 honorees here.)
“Last year, because this award was new, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. We were delighted that there was such strong interest, because that interest demonstrates how much terrific work is happening at UW. Building and sustaining of a culture of mentorship—one that is grounded in the science of mentorship—truly helps drive excellence on campus,” said ICTR Executive Director Dr. Allan Brasier.
Nominations are now open through May 30 for the 2025 ICTR Faculty Mentorship Awards. Nominees must come from ICTR partner schools/colleges on the UW–Madison campus, which are:
- College of Engineering
- School of Education
- School of Medicine and Public Health
- School of Nursing
- School of Pharmacy
- School of Veterinary Medicine
To nominate a candidate, submit a completed nomination form and two support letters (one of which must be from a current or former mentee of the nominee) to info@ictr.wisc.edu by May 30, 2025. The awardee(s) will be announced in fall 2025. Recipient(s) will receive a prize of $1,000.
Selection criteria for the award align with recommendations from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) 2019 consensus report on the science of effective mentorship. The selection committee will also consider whether nominees have helped foster and shape a culture of mentorship within their unit, department, or school/college.
