Overview
Institutional policy requires that applications reviewed by the UW-Madison Health Sciences IRB (HS-IRB) undergo scientific review commensurate with the level of risk of the study. Because the level of risk is generally higher for studies reviewed by the HS-IRB, the ICTR Scientific Review Committee (SRC) was established in 2008 to assess the scientific merit of investigator-initiated, non-oncology, human subjects research submitted to the HS-IRB that has not already undergone equivalent peer review by another entity. Studies that meet the requirements for SRC review are automatically routed to the committee when the application is submitted in ARROW based on the applicant’s response to the Scientific Review section. However, the HS-IRB may request review of any study by the SRC if additional scientific review is warranted.
This guidance describes the SRC process and general criteria for exclusion from SRC review, including a list of study procedures that may excuse an application from review.
