Fourth BIRCWH scholar, a breast cancer researcher, joins current cohort

by Jennifer Smith

Anna Beck portraitThe Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) is pleased to announce the addition of a fourth scholar to the 2025-27 cohort of the UW Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) program. Anna Beck, MD, an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, joins three faculty scholars who were announced in late November: Drs. Minh Tung Phung, María Virumbrales-Muñoz, and Wenhui Zhou.

The UW BIRCWH program, which supports the career development of those focused on women’s health and/or sex differences research, was renewed in 2025 for an additional five-year cycle by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The BIRCWH award is funded through the Office of Research on Women’s Health in partnership with NIH institutes that include the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The opportunity to include a fourth scholar in the cohort will support the career growth of Dr. Beck, whose research project is “Identifying markers of field cancerization and breast cancer development in patients with lobular neoplasia.” Her appointment as a scholar began Dec. 28, 2025.

All BIRCWH scholars receive interdisciplinary mentoring, curricular, and research support to advance their research careers in women’s health. The UW program is administered by the Department of Radiology in partnership with ICTR.
